Stay Report: Maru Maru Hotel (Zanzibar, Tanzania - January 2014)

Stay Report: Maru Maru Hotel
comment below and let me know your thoughts :)

Just steps from the Fordhani Gardens, seaside, and the Fort is a great boutique hotel - Maru Maru. The hotel is situated next to Fordhani Gardens and the Fort and the hotel is centrally located to walk anywhere around Stone Town from here.  I found the hotel through my search for places to stay in Zanzibar, and it was very easy to book the hotel online.  After booking, I communicated with the general manager via email who was very responsive and nice. I had also booked an airport transfer from hotel, and the car was there when we landed.  It was a nice and smooth transfer to the hotel.

The only negative aspect about the hotel is the location, as it is located down a street but a little off the main road.  During the day it is fine, but at night it can be a bit tricky to walk from the street to the hotel.  The hotel looks updated but it is an older building in Stone Town so the lobby is a bit narrow.  The lobby contains a small waiting area, the check-in desks, as well as stairs to access the upper floors.  Check-in went smoothly and we were shown to our room.

As I was traveling in a group, I had booked 2 rooms – and the rooms were available either had 2 twin or 1 Queen bed; I had booked one of each.  Both rooms were nice and a good size, but the room with the 2 twin beds was a little bigger.  The rooms were centered around an open courtyard so it was nice to have an inside/outside feel.  For the room with the Queen bed, as you entered the room the bed was to the right while to the left was a chest with a TV on top.  There were nightstands on either side of the bed and a mosquito net on top of the bed.  Further into the room, you stepped up and on the right was the bathroom while on the left was the armoire/closet.  The bathroom was nice, modern and updated and had nice toiletries that were made by a local women’s group.  The room was nice but it was a bit compact so while it easily fit two people, it felt cramped when more people were in the room.

The room with the twin beds was laid out differently and had significantly more space.  As you entered into the room, in front of you were the two twin beds, with a nightstand on each side and each had a mosquito net.  Against one wall was the armoire/closet, while next to the door was the chest with the TV on top.  Further along this wall was the entrance to the bathroom, which contained a sink, a toilet, and a shower – all were modern and nice, and again toiletries were made by a local women’s group.

Breakfast was included and that is served on the rooftop lounge/restaurant which had amazing views of Stone Town and the ocean.  The lounge was also open in the evening so you could enjoy an amazing sunset – the only downside at night is that there is not enough lamps/candles/light so its pretty dark up there.  Breakfast was standard cereals and toast, with fruits and an egg station.  Coffee, and hot chocolate, were made by a machine.  In addition to the breakfast, another amenity provided by the hotel was wifi.  The complimentary wifi was available in the room and it had good speed.

Overall, it was a nice stay at the Maru Maru.  The hotel is nice and modern, the service is very good and attentive, and the location is very good.  As I said, the hotel is located only a couple of steps away from Fordhani Gardens and the only negative thing about the hotel is the entrance/lobby. To get from the seaside/Fordhani Gardens to the hotel, you have to walk up a road that a night is dimly light (during the day, this is where all the taxis hang out so creates easier access to taxis). There are plenty of people walking and we never had a security issue, but it is something to consider. The lobby is right off the street so there is no major entrance nor a big sitting area; not a big deal to me but some in my group cared about that.  If you can overlook that, you can enjoy a really nice boutique hotel in Zanzibar.

Stay Report: Hilton Addis Ababa (Ethiopia - January 2014)

Stay Report: Hilton Addis Ababa
comment below and let me know your thoughts :)

I had a really long layover in Addis Ababa (over 14 hours) so instead of spending it at the airport, I decided to use my points and relax at the Hilton Addis.  Overall, the hotel is very large and expansive with lots of amenities, but definitely needs to be updated.

After you exit customs and enter the arrivals hall, there is a Hilton booth/stall where you can wait for transportation.  The hotel does not provide complimentary transportation, rather there are two paid options; either the Hilton shuttle or a private car.  The private car costs a little more, and since I had been flying all night and had assumed the private car would be quicker, I had booked that option; I was very wrong.  I entered the booth/stall with another couple who had paid for the shuttle; they waited for 2 minutes and went into the shuttle while 15 minutes later I was still waiting for the private car.  When the car finally showed up, it was dirty with trash all over the floor, looked run down, was uncomfortable, and the driver was playing a rap song with a lot of cursing and inappropriate language.  It was definitely not the way you want to start your trip.

The hotel is located near the UN building but there is not much around it in terms of walking. The hotel does provide maps for shopping and other amenities if you want to take a cab or private car.  The hotel is a big complex with lots of people and is very busy. From the outside, the hotel looked like it was nicely built for the 1980's and has not been updated since then.  From the entrance, you walk up an outside walkway to the main lobby.  When you enter the lobby, straight ahead are the check-in desks while to left is the sitting area and to the right are other services/desks (see below for the facilities available).  Check-in went smoothly, I was given my key and quickly went to my room.  The first room I went to had an odd smell to it so I asked to be switched to another room.

The room was a decent size but was very outdated as both the room and the bathroom looked very good for the 1980's.  As you entered into the room, on the left was the bathroom while on the right was closet.  The bathroom had a sink, a tub, and a toilet, all of which looked outdated and were very low to the ground.  Further into the room, against the left wall was the bed while against the right wall was the chest with drawers on the bottom and a TV on top and a desk next to it.  I had a room with a king size bed, so that was against the wall with a nightstand on either side.  The bed itself was large and decent but not extremely comfortable; it was not uncomfortable but not extremely comfortable either.

We had access to the club lounge and we went there for breakfast as well as cocktail hour.  The Club is not that big and it is divided into two sections – the first section on the left contained the food and drinks while in the right section was the seating area.  The seating area was enough for 15-20 people, which was fine for breakfast as there were not many people; however, for cocktail hour there were TONS of people so it felt congested and tight.

As I said earlier, the hotel has a very big complex and there are lots of facilities for the guests to enjoy including:
  • a money changer with good rates (note: remember to keep your receipt as we had charged food to the room and needed to pay that but the hotel needed a receipt from the hotel money changer to verify the exchange)
  • Airline offices – Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways
  • Safari and Tour Group Bookings
  • An Olympic size pool (which was very busy in the evening time)
  • a promenade with shops
  • a restaurant near the pool (with decent food but service was a little slow and hectic)
  • a spa and sauna with one of the best, and cheapest, massage I have ever had.

While the facilities provided for the guest are a great positive, a huge negative was the lack of customer service.  After the issue with the airport pick-up, I had asked the hotel to make note of it when I checked in.  When I followed up, I had to talk to multiple individuals because nobody spoke to each other.  It was very frustrating repeating the same information due to lack of communication amongst the staff.

Overall, it was an interesting stay at the Hilton Addis.  The positives were the nice facilities and amenities available to the guest.  The negatives were the poor room quality and the poor front desk customer service.  It was definitely not the Hilton experience I was expecting, but it was better than sleeping at the airport.

Trip Report: Kenya Airways, Lagos to Dar Es Salaam, Kigali to Lagos via Nairobi (April 2018)

Trip Report: Kenya Airways - Lagos to Dar Es Salaam, Kigali to Lagos via Nairobi
comment below and let me know your thoughts :)

Traveling around Africa generally can cost a lot, both in time and money.  The ticket price will be high, the travel time long, be very expensive, and most times you have to leave the continent to travel from one country to the other.  Luckily, there are African companies that are making travel within Africa more affordable and convenient; both Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways.  Both are the flag carriers of their respective countries, both seem to have updated fleets, good schedules, and both seem reliable.  I was looking to travel from Nigeria to Tanzania, and return from Rwanda back to Nigeria and in looking at my options both Ethiopian and Kenyan came up in the search.  Both were competitive in price and both had about the same overall travel time, but I choose Kenya Airways for a couple of options: 1) I had flown Ethiopian on my way into Nigeria so wanted to try another airline; 2) it had been about 4 years since I had flown Kenyan so wanted to see what updates were available; 3) the departure timings for Kenyan were better; and 4) Kenya had more options in terms of flight scheduling.

Booking travel with Kenya was very easy through the website.  The site was easy to book and manage your reservation.  I had to make some modifications to my reservation and that could not be accomplished online, so they either have a chat function available or a call center; both of which were helpful.  Another good feature about Kenya is that they offer refunds on your ticket – if your schedule changes and you need to cancel your ticket, you can ask for a refund instead of travel credit.  The refund amount depends on your ticket and class of service, but everything is available online and usually the refund is processed within 4-6 weeks.  A great service from Kenya.

After booking my flight, I managed my reservation through the Kenya Airways app.  Through the app and website I was able to preselect my seats for free, request a special meal, and add my Skyteam frequent flyer number.  I was also able to check-in and print my boarding pass directly from the website 24-hours prior to my departure.  My first flight was from Lagos to Dar Es Salaam via Nairobi.  The Lagos to Nairobi sector was scheduled to depart Lagos at 10:45p and arrive into Nairobi at 6:05am, and then I had 45 minutes to connect to my other flight which was scheduled to depart Nairobi at 6:55am and arrive into Dar Es Salaam at 8:20am.  This was a tight connection, but this is what Kenya Airways provided me and everything was booked on one ticket so I went ahead with it and hoped for the best.

The first flight was operated by a Boeing 737-800 with a 3-3 seat configuration.  The aircraft operates the Nairobi to Lagos sector, and the same planes brings passengers back to Nairobi.  The incoming aircraft arrived late, and the turnaround time was slow, thus boarding began well past the 10pm which was listed on the boarding pass.  Boarding was done by groups and the groups were strictly enforced; this made for a lengthy and delayed boarding to an already delayed flight.  First impressions upon entering the aircraft were good, as it looked like a new-ish plane with updated seats and personal PTV for each seat.  Each seat also contained a blanket, a pillow, and headphones on them.  The seat pitch was decent, not too tight but not too generous either (I am 6’1 and while my knees were not hitting the back seat, there wasn’t tons of room either) and the seat comfort was also average (it was fine for a 3hr flight but there needed to be more comfort for the longer flights).  Each seat contained a PTV with a USB port and headphone jack, a tray table, and then a seatback pocket with the airline magazine, the duty free, and an airsickness bag.  The doors finally closed, we pushed back for the gate, and headed to the runway for the 5hr 20mi flight to Nairobi.

Kenya Airways is a full service airline so complimentary meals and drinks are provided.  Once we reached cruising altitude, the meal and drink service commenced.  The special meals were delivered at the same time as the regular meal, and for the regular meal there was an option between two choices.  I had ordered a special meal and while I appreciate being served a meal (as these days meals are disappearing from economy), the quality of the meal was not that good.  It was a decent quantity, not too much food but not too light either (perfect for a 4hr flight) but the quality of the food definitely need to be improved.  Complimentary soft drinks, tea, and coffee were also provided.  Once the meal service ended, passengers sat back and watched their screens.  The PTV screens were already on once you sat down, so most passengers just watched the entertainment program the entire flight.  There was a decent selection of TV shows and movies, again good enough for a 3-4 hour flight but you would get bored on longer flights.

Even though we departed late, we landed roughly on time and taxied to the gate.  There is a separate line for transferring passengers, but because Kenya is starting new flights to the U.S. they have modified the transit so all passengers must go through enhanced screening.  While I understand the security of this, it adds time to the transit process and this needs to be factored into the connection time they provide to customers.  There was a HUGE line of passengers in the transiting security line and it looked like I was going to miss my connection when the airline itself started to call out passengers for my flight.  A representative was pulling passengers and putting them ahead of the security line as I only had a total of 25 minutes to make my connection.  Since I was moved to the front, I went through security and ran to my gate in time to make it to my flight.

The second flight was operated by an Embraer 190 with a 2-2 seat configuration.  While the plane size was small, the seat pitch and comfort were nice and each seat had its own PTV screen as well as USB port.  The plane was only half full so the doors closed and we pushed back for an on-time departure.  Since there were not that many passengers, I was able to move up and stretch out to a row unto myself.  Even though the flight time was 1hr30min, a light breakfast was served just after take-off.  The breakfast consisted of a fresh croissant which was nice, warm and fresh.  It was small but it was nice and that is something I appreciated from Kenyan, especially on this short flight.  Tea, coffee, and complimentary drinks were also served with the meal.  Once the meal service end, most passengers either slept or watched the entertainment system.  The system was not as extensive as the system of my Lagos to Nairobi flight, but there was a decent selection of TV shows to pass the short flight time.  We soon landed in Dar Es Salaam and luckily my bags also made the tight connection in Nairobi.

My return flight was scheduled differently than my outbound flight.  I was returning from Kigali to Lagos via Nairobi, and I had scheduled a long layover in Nairobi.  My flight was scheduled to depart Kigali at 8:30am and arrive into Nairobi 12:35pm, and I was then going to connect to my flight departing Nairobi at 6:35p and arriving back into Lagos at 9:50pm.  The first flight was operated by an Embraer 190 and has a stop in Bujumbura.  The flight was supposed to board at 7:45am, but that came and went without any announcements.  Finally, the announcement was made and we boarded the plane.  This plane looked similar to the plane that I had taken from Nairobi to Dar Es Salaam, with the same legroom, the same individual PTV’s on each screen, and the same 2-2 configuration.  The flight time from Kigali to Bujumbura was only 45 minutes so most passengers past the time watching their screens.  The passengers on the plane consisted of passengers flying from Nairobi to Bujumbura (who stopped in Kigali); passengers flying from Kigali to Bujumbura; passengers flying from Bujumbura to Nairobi; and passengers flying from Kigali to Nairobi (who stopped in Bujumbura).  We landed at Bujumbura, where some passengers got off while others got on, and set off for Nairobi.  Since this was a longer flight, at 1h55m, both a beverage service and a meal service were provided.  The flight was uneventful and we landed in Nairobi close to on-time.

After a scheduled delay, I fought my way through Nairobi traffic to connect to my 6:35p flight to Lagos.  Even though we had boarding groups assigned to us, these were not enforced and everyone boarded as they pleased.  The operating aircraft was a Boeing 737-800, the same aircraft that brought me from Lagos to Nairobi.  The layout was the same, the seat pitch and seat comfort were the same, and again each seat had their own PTV screen.  As this was my fourth flight with Kenyan in the span of two weeks, I had basically exhausted the entertainment options by this point.  As the flight time was 5hr15m, after takeoff a meal and beverage service were provided.  For the rest of the flight, the attendants were not present at all until it was time to get the aircraft ready for landing.  They attendants did not come by with water or to pass through the cabin to collect trash; the attendants just sat in the back talking.  After a bit of a delay, we finally landed in Lagos a bit behind schedule.

Overall, it was a decent experience with Kenya Airways.  Since my last experience with them, some aspects have improved while others have stayed the same.  They definitely have a better on-board product versus what they previously had, and that makes for a better inflight experience.  The food quality still is average, and the overall customer service still needs to be improved.  I had some great flight attendants and great customer service, and I had some really apathetic ones.  I would not hesitate to fly them again, but I would just keep my expectations manageable.

Stay Report: Kigali Marriott Hotel (Kigali, Rwanda - April 2018)

Stay Report: Kigali Marriott Hotel
comment below and let me know your thoughts :)

I was planning a trip to Kigali and when looking for a place to stay, many individuals recommended the Marriott hotel.  I looked online and they had some good reward stays so I went ahead and booked my rewards stay at the hotel.  It was very easy to book the hotel through the Marriott’s website, and very easy to manage the reservation either through the app or through the website.  The only thing I found difficult was trying to contact the hotel – as I was out of the country I could not call the hotel, and trying to find an email of the hotel was almost impossible.  I contacted the hotel through social media, and from there I received an email address.  While the hotel responded somewhat quickly through social media, to me it was an unnecessary step as other hotel brands put their email directly on their website.  From the outside, the hotel looks grand and newly built, and the grandeur and new look continues inside the hotel.

As you enter the hotel through the main entrance, you enter into a massive lobby which covers three floors, has an open terrace, and huge windows which look onto the outside gardens.  All of these design elements make the hotel feel bigger but also makes it more open.  The lobby contains a lot of facilities across many floors including the check-in desks, a waiting area, a coffee shop, and shops on the main level; the restaurant and access to the outdoor space on the lower level; and windows from the executive lounge looking down from the top level.  As I had booked with points, I was asked if I wanted to access the lounge for an additional daily fee; I took them up on the offer as in the lounge you could obtain breakfast, a private business lounge, and snacks in the evening.  Check-in was relatively quick and efficient and I received the key to my room.

My room was located towards the end of the hallway, and the hallway décor looked calm, nice, and new; the room also looked nice as well.  As you entered in the room, on the left was the bathroom while on the right was the closet.  The closet contained a mirror on the outside and storage, a safe, and a robe inside; the closets provided plenty of storage space.  Across from the closet was the bathroom which contained a sink, a shower, a toilet, a sink, as well as additional storage space.  The bathroom was nice, a bit compact, and contained nice toiletries but the major problem was the design of the shower.  The showerhead was pointed one way but the drain for the shower was on the opposite side.  Unfortunately the shower was not designed for efficient water drainage; therefore, every time you took a shower the bottom flooded before it drained.  Since the shower door was not sealed properly, this meant that every time the shower flooded so did the bathroom floor making all the mats and towels wet.  Taking a shower was a real pain.

Further into the room, on the left hand side was the bed with a nightstand on each side.  The bed was the updated Marriott bed and provided a comfortable night’s sleep.  Across from the bed, all along the wall, was a desk/ledge.  The ledge started on one side of the wall and continued further down to the other side of the wall, where it got bigger and turned into a desk.  The ledge was storage space as well as contained books on Kigali and Rwanda, contained the welcome tray that the hotel provided, and contained the desk.  On one side of the ledge was the space for a luggage rack and on the other side of the ledge was the window.  The room also contained a lounge sofa next to the window.  The windows were large and bright and let in natural light when they were opened – the hotel opened the curtains when they would tidy the room during the day, and closed the curtains during their turn-down service.  Overall, the room was spacious and provided a lot of nice amenities.  There were also USB ports available in the room, but the direction of the USB port was such that it made plugging items in very difficult; like the shower it was a great idea but poor execution.

The hotel is a full service hotel meaning there are a lot of amenities for the guests to enjoy.  These include a fitness center, an outdoor pool, a restaurant, a spa, business center, executive lounge, complimentary wifi, and concierge service.  As I said, I had access to the executive lounge so I went there for breakfast and evening snacks.  The lounge was nice and spacious, provided small but filling food items, contained a computer and printer, and had huge windows which overlooked the lobby.  The service in the lounge was also spectacular as well.  I also experienced the wifi, which was complimentary to everybody in the lobby and login access in your room – decent speeds and strong enough to check emails and stream videos.  The hotel also provides airport shuttle for a fee, and I used the hotel shuttle on my departure as my flight was early in the morning; the shuttle was confirmed 24-hours prior to my departure and everything went smoothly.

Overall, it was a nice stay at the Marriott Kigali.  It’s a grand and modern hotel with lots of amenities and lots of space for the guests to enjoy.  The rooms are spacious and comfortable.  The only negatives are the bathroom design, but other than that it’s a nice hotel that is centrally located and comfortable.

Trip Report: Arik Air, Lagos to Calabar, Nigeria (April 2018)

Trip Report: Arik Air - Lagos to Calabar, Nigeria
comment below and let me know your thoughts :)

When traveling domestically in Nigeria, there are a couple of options to choose from.  Originally, Arik Air had been the leader but then over the years’ late departures, late arrivals, and cancelled flights brought their reputation down.  Meanwhile, other carriers such as AirPeace (check out that review here) came up and took Arik’s place.  Arik has recently refocused itself and started to become better so I wanted to give them a try when traveling domestically from Lagos to Calabar.

Booking a flight in Nigeria can either be done online, directly at the airport, or through ticketing agents.  I bought mine directly at the airport as it is easier regarding cash payments.  The service at the airport was extremely slow and inefficient, they did not seem in any hurry to issue the ticket.  Once the ticket was issued, they gave me a hand written receipt that included my reservation code and I received a text regarding my booking but no hard copy print out of my reservation.  Once I went home, I went online to Arik’s website to manage my booking and this is where I could see the booking but could not email the booking to myself; it was not a big deal but an unnecessary hassle.

My flight was scheduled to depart Lagos at 11:15a and arrive into Calabar at 12:45p.  The domestic terminal is divided with AirPeace on one side and Arik on the other so I went into the Arik side to check-in my bags.  The check-in counters were not busy so I went directly up to check-in my bags.  Recently, Arik acquired smaller aircraft to use on their domestic and regional services.  Maybe it was because a smaller aircraft was being used, or maybe they just wanted extra money, but Arik was being really strict about how much baggage to bring onboard and how much to check-in.  I normally travel with AirPeace, who have a fleet of bigger planes and do not worry as much, but this was my first time with Arik and they were very strict and it cost me a lot of excess baggage fees.

Boarding was supposed to commence at 10:30a, but that came and went with no announcement and no indication of boarding.  At 11am, they announced boarding for the flight.  There was no process for the boarding, passengers just came through and presented their boarding passes, went through security pat downs, and boarded the first bus/car/vehicle to take them to the airplane.  The operating aircraft was a Dash Q400 with a 2-2 seat configuration.  Once onboard, the aircraft looked clean and modern (although later one many cockroaches appeared from the bottom of the aircraft, so it wasn’t as clean as it looked).  Passengers boarded and took their seats, the boarding door was closed, manual safety demonstrations were conducted, and we taxied to the runway.  Our departure was a bit delayed because the flight attendant went by every passenger to ensure their phone was just in airplane mode, but was completely turned off; in fact, he stood there while you turned the phone off.

The seat itself was comfortable and decent enough for the 1hr 15m flight.  The legroom was also good, not tight but definitely not substantial either.  The seat had a tray table in the middle, a pocket with the safety card on top, and another pocket for your personal items on the bottom.  In my previous domestic flights with other airlines, as soon as we passed 10,000 feet the flight attendants were up and started their inflight service.  Here, the inflight service began well into the flight even though it was the same service.  In all domestic flights, airlines pass out a snack box which contains juice, a muffin, a napkin, biscuits, and a mint.  As they are passing out the boxes, you are also offered a glass of water.  While it is not substantial, it is a nice gesture and the boxes are appreciated; however, the service was lacking as everything was conducted without smiling or being pleasant.  After the service was conducted and they came by to collect the trash, the rest of the flight was uneventful and we eventually started our descent into Calabar.  We landed and taxied to the stand behind schedule, but then again every domestic flight I have taken in Nigeria has not been on time.

Overall, it was an interesting experience with ArikAir.  I was expecting the worst, because that is what others had told me to expect.  The flight left generally on time and the overall experience was alright.  If I compare it to other domestic airlines, however, then Arik falls short.  The customer service was definitely lacking at Arik, they were very nitpicky regarding baggage and carryon, and overall their service was not as pleasant as other domestic options.  While generally they do offer more competitive rates on their tickets, it is not that much of a difference and thus not an incentive to choose them.  This coupled with their overall lack of service means that in the future I probably would not choose Arik for my domestic flight options.

Trip Report: Precision Air Tanzania - Zanzibar, Tanzania to Nairobi, Kenya (April 2018)

Trip Report: Precision Air Tanzania - Zanzibar to Nairobi
comment below and let me know your thoughts :)

I was in Zanzibar and wanted to travel to Nairobi directly, without having to stop or travel back to Dar Es Salaam.  There are only two airlines that fly directly on this route – Kenya Airways and Precision Air.  Kenya Airways is the national airline of Kenya while Precision Air is a Tanzania-based airline that is also partly owned by Kenya Airways.  Both airlines operate various flights throughout the day, so the choice is based on timing and preference.  I chose to fly with Precision Air for a couple of reasons: 1) I was already flying with Kenya Airways on other sectors (check out the reviews here) so wanted to try a different airline; 2) the flight timing was better with Precision Air; and 3) the flight was a bit cheaper, but not by much.  I booked the flight directly through the Precision Air website, and it was generally easy and efficient to do so.  While booking the flight, I could select the flight times but I could not pre-select seats at time of purchase.  After booking the ticket, I received the confirmation in my email.

I had previously flown with Precision Air, about 5 years, on a short, 20-minute flight from Dar Es Salaam to Zanzibar (check out the review here) so I was somewhat familiar with their product.  They mainly operate a regional network of short flights using ATR, propeller aircraft.  Since the previous flight was only 20-minutes, I did not get a chance to experience the full service of Precision Air but now I would on this flight.  The flight from Zanzibar to Nairobi was the second sector of the flight, as the plane originated in Dar Es Salaam and stopped in Zanzibar before continuing on to Nairobi.  As they mainly operate shorter flights, the service is a bit limited onboard but complimentary luggage (one piece of 23kg) is included.

My flight was scheduled for a 7:35p departure with a 9:15p arrival into Nairobi.  There was an earlier flight at 6p that I was trying to get on, and for this I had contacted the airline via email but got no response so I had to call them.  On the telephone, they told me the charge to change the flight would be $200 – which seems like a big price to pay (and frankly was almost the price I paid for the ticket itself) so I did not make the change.  24hours prior to my flight I went to the website and was able to check-in online.  Through the check-in, I was able to pre-select my seat as well as receive an electronic boarding pass.

I made it to the airport with plenty of time before the flight, and at this time at night there were only Precision Air departures – either to Nairobi or Dar Es Salaam.  Given this, check-in was very quick and easy; luggage was tagged and I received my boarding pass.  Given the flight was supposed to take off at 7:35p, we were to start boarding at 7p but the incoming aircraft was delayed due to heavy rains in the area.  They finally called the boarding of the flight, but there was no order as we were just called to the boarding.  Once the boarding passes were collected, we made our way onto the bus which took us to our aircraft parked at the end.  The operating aircraft was an ATR4272 in with a 2-2 seat configuration.  Boarding happens through the rear of the aircraft, as in the front is where the luggage is stored.

On board, the plane looked fairly new and was in good condition.  The seats were comfortable and had good legroom (especially for someone who is tall like me).  The only thing that was an issue was the lack of overhead bin space given it was not a big aircraft.  After all the passengers boarded and took their seats, the boarding door closed, manual safety demonstrations were conducted, and we taxied to the runway.

Take-off was generally smooth, which was surprising given how bad the weather was (it was raining all day).  Once we reached cruising altitude, the inflight service commenced.  Complimentary drinks were served along with a choice of biscuits or a chicken-sandwich.  There was no other option besides chicken, so if you did not eat chicken and/or meat the only choice were the biscuits.  After the service, passengers were left on their own for the remainder of the flight.  The seatpocket did contain an airline magazine, as well as the safety card and the sickness bag, so that was something to read during the flight.  Most passengers either slept or watched pre-downloaded shows until it was time to land in Nairobi.  We started our descent, the cabin was prepped for landing, and we landed in Nairobi a bit behind schedule and then taxied to the gate.

Overall, it was generally a pleasant flight with Precision Air.  The flight time was 1hr 20minute and for that short flight time you got a comfortable seat with decent legroom, complimentary luggage and drinks, biscuits or a sandwich, and decent service.  My only complaint was that the price for the flight was a bit high, given the short distance and the minimal service, but other than that a good flight onboard Precision Air,

Stay Report: Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort & Spa (Seychelles - January 2014)

Stay Report: Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort & Spa
comment below and let me know your thoughts :)

I was going to be spending some time in Seychelles, so I was looking for a nice resort that had a lot of amenities for the guests.  I’ve had previous success with the Hilton brand so when I found this property, I decided to book the Hilton Northlome Seychelles.  Overall, it was an average stay with nice rooms, good staff, but a bit disappointing with the service sometimes.

The hotel is laid out in an open setting, so everything allows for fresh air and seeing the natural beauty; it is really nice when the weather is pleasant, not so nice in the rainy season.  When you first enter the property, you go to a small office in which you are welcomed and then wait to be shuttled to the next building which houses the check-in desk.  When I arrived, the hotel attendants seemed unsure about what was going on or our arrival; it was a bit chaotic.

The check-in desks are located in the main building, which also houses the business center, the pools, the restaurant, and a gym below.  After being checked-in, which again was chaotic, I was given a tour of the hotel, and then shown to the room.  I later found out that I was not given a lot of information that should have been provided during check-in, information that would have been useful such as access to free shuttles.

While I have many complaints about the check-in and the service, I cannot complain about the room as it was beautiful and spacious.  The room I had booked was the ‘king studio apartment’ and it felt like a mini villa with a balcony and porch, which provided nice options to sit outside and enjoy the view.  As you approached the building, you entered the porch which had chairs to sit outside and enjoy the view of the property.  As you opened the door, you entered into a mini-hallway in which the only way to go is left.  As you progressed into the room, you enter into the sitting area with couches, a chair, a desk, and a TV on a stand that is connected to DVD player.  As I was traveling in a group, I had requested for a roll-away bed to be placed in the room, and this was placed between the couch and the window.  Even with the rollaway bed, this part of the room felt open and spacious.

While the windows were against one side of the wall, against the opposite wall, beyond the couches, was the large king-size bed with a nightstand on either side.  The bed was extremely bid, very comfortable, and provided a really good night’s rest.  As I said, everything about the room was spacious, and this was also true of the bathroom, which was huge.  There were two entrances to the bathroom, the main entrance was near the TV stand while there was another entrance near the entryway.  The bathroom contained both the closet and the bathroom, but each section was very spacious.  The bathroom contained a toilet, a standup shower, a big closet, a double sink, and a Jacuzzi tub.  The best part about the tub was that it faced the window looking outside – this window/door you could open and it would lead to the balcony.  It was a really nice view and amazing to sit in the tub and look outside.  The balcony outside the bathroom connected to the balcony outside the room, and this balcony contained lounge chairs to sit, relax, and enjoy the views.

As the Seychelles is an island, most guests come here for the pool and beach.  The hotel does have two pools but their beach access is that of a rocky beach.  They do provide snorkeling and scuba equipment (for a fee) and to access a sand beach, they have free shuttles to Beau Vallon beach (we found this out on our last day).  The two pools are located in the main building where the check-in desks are located.  The main building has three floors – on the bottom floor is one pool plus the gym (and the walkway to the rocky beach); the second floor contains the second pool, the check-in desks, the business center, and access to the third floor; the third floor contains the restaurant.  The pools were decent size, not too small but they could have been bigger.  There was one major issue with the pool; lack of towels.  Usually, the hotel provides towels specifically for the pool so that you don’t have to use your own.  The hotel had the setup there but no towels; every guest kept asking for them but they never brought them.

The business center were a couple of computers connected to a printer in an open-air environment near the check-in desks/lobby.  It was a bit slow but it was provided enough access to check-in and print boarding passes.  As I was there for a couple of days, I was also able to try both the restaurant on the third floor as well as the bar/lounge near the pool.  The bar/lounge is open for lunch and drinks and is very nice, has good food, but extremely slow service.  There is a restaurant open for dinner on the top of the terrace that serves a different buffet nightly. We went for the Seychelles cuisine buffet - overpriced and definitely not worth it!

Overall, it was an interesting stay at the Hilton Northlome Seychelles.  The hotel is a bit far from Beau Vallon and many other destinations, but it is located right on the bus route so you can take that anywhere. There is also a small supermarket located 7 minutes uphill from the hotel which provides easy and quick access to items that you may need.  The rooms are nice and spacious, but the customer service needs improvement.  The room service and room attendant were very good and very responsive; however the front desk service and attendants were neither good nor customer friendly.  The service was so bad that on the 3rd day I was there, I wrote to the general manager about the lack of service. The general manager was quick to reply, asked to meet with me in person to discuss the issues and try to resolve it prior to my departure. The managers were very accommodating and nice and they made the trip worthwhile.

Tip: taxis to the airport are very expensive. If you have booked a local nature tour, the tour guides will also do airport pick-up and drop offs and usually at a better rate. This is what we did and saved a lot of money and it was more comfortable and convenient.
